In one of the clauses of the contract, Microsoft made it clear that they did not have to tell SCP with which manufacturers and companies they were working to integrate that operating system. The latter bought a license in a flat-rate format: they didn’t pay per copy, but per OEM they worked with. In December 1980 that system took an important leap: renamed to 86-DOS (whose first version was 0.33, continuing the QDOS numbering), an operating system that began to be licensed to manufacturers and other companies such as Microsoft.

Paterson continued to work on it and included an assembler and a code debugger, although there was no editor, which was fixed in just two weeks. At the end of August 1980 QDOS 0.11 was ready and stable enough to be able to start selling it. One of the clear differences between CP / M and QDOS was the FAT12 filesystem, much more ambitious than CP / M and that made the advantages clear in that section. “I always wanted to write my own operating system,” he said, “I always hated CP / M and believed that I could do much better.” QDOS 0.10, with about 50% of the features I wanted to achieve, was ready in July. Hence its name, QDOS (“Quick and Dirty Operating System”, “Dirty and Fast Operating System”), a very basic system that built by copying the CP / M APIs -A very well-known operating system at the time- that were publicly available. The 24-year-old started developing its own system operational in April 1980 as fast (and dirty) as it could. SCP wanted to sell computers based on that CPU, and its managers decided to put Paterson to solve that. That promised, but there was no operating system to support it, and only Microsoft’s BASIC-86 language was available to take advantage of it.

That moment was especially significant because Intel released its 8086 processor. When the race ended started working for Seattle Computer Products company (SCP).
